QA Computing Ltd - Virtual Worlds

QA Computing, providing professional computer services for over 16 years.

Second Life is a 3-D virtual world entirely built and owned by its residents. Since opening to the public in 2003, it has grown explosively and today is inhabited by a total of 4,549,724 people from around the globe.

From the moment you enter the World you’ll discover a vast digital continent, teeming with people, entertainment, experiences and opportunity. Once you’ve explored a bit, perhaps you’ll find a perfect parcel of land to build your house or business.

You’ll also be surrounded by the Creations of your fellow residents. Because residents retain the rights to their digital creations, they can buy, sell and trade with other residents.

The Marketplace currently supports millions of US dollars in monthly transactions. This commerce is handled with the in-world unit-of-trade, the Linden dollar (L$), which can be converted to US dollars at several thriving online Linden Dollar exchanges.

Companies Are Finding Second Life…

Collin Perris lives largely in a fantasy world. Or, rather, a virtual world. His job with IBM ( IBM ) demands it.

Perris heads IBM’s “digital convergence” team, which among other things looks for customers — in the virtual world Second Life.

Investment bank HSBC says that Second Life is adding 230,000 users per week. Its size and growth rate have sparked a lot of press for Second Life. It’s also sparked a lot of attention and participation from the mainstream business world as a new marketing opportunity and perhaps as a place to make a few bucks.

“We think there is a phenomenon occurring . . . something huge here,” Perris said. “We’ll see the rise of the new Googles, the new Amazons.”

Other big companies have a presence in Second Life

They include General Motors , Toyota Motor , Dell , Cisco Systems , Sun Microsystems and Reuters Group.

Q A Computing & Second Life…

Q A Computing have been working with Packaging & Converting Essentials ( Antwerp , Belgium ), or more specifically their Second Life representative, Ludwig Stapleton.

Our ‘In World’ developer, David Boelcke, has created a bespoke News Reader for P&CE, nothing new as news readers are ‘ten to a penny’ in SL and quite a number of companies use them to stream news feeds directly from their own websites to residents of Second Life. This way they never have to venture out of their virtual world to catch up with the latest news of their favourite subject.

So why was ours different, well firstly our news reader is capable of accepting multiple feeds, the one we created for P&CE has five, but in reality there is no limit, we have 40 & 60 character width versions, and also a 60 width news hud which the in world Avatar attaches to themselves (so that it is always visible on screen) and can then read the news no mater where their Second Life activities takes them.

Oh and did I mention that ours have been assessed to be over 400% more efficient than any other RSS readers available in Second Life!

How did we achieve this … a specific blend of Second Life Scripts (LSL) and real life Scripts and the power of our Hosting solutions.
